We’ve all heard about the effects single use plastics have on the environment and our oceans. But you might not have heard about the zero waste living, a movement which focuses preventing waste and reusing as much of what we buy as possible.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
Refuse single use items like plastic bags, straws, cups, utensils, and unnecessary packaging.
Reduce the waste you generate by making more conscious, higher quality purchases.
Grow your own food as much as possible. If space is limited, indoor container gardens are an attractive money-saving option.
Repurpose – find new uses for old objects and repair items whenever possible.
Replace – As their life cycle comes to an end, replace plastic items with more durable and sustainable alternatives. Think bamboo toothbrushes, fabric shopping bags, reusable water bottles and beeswax wrap instead of plastic cling wrap.
Recycle – Separate your waste and find out about recycling initiatives in your neighbourhood. Donate pre-loved clothes, books and furniture to charity.
Creating a green shopping list is another great step towards being more environmentally friendly. Luckily this doesn’t mean cutting back on your usual favourites, but rather being more conscious of our choices, and knowing more about how things are grown and produced.

- Not all plastic packaging can be recycled so whenever possible choose alternatives that can be.
- Take some time to read product labels. There are plenty high quality cruelty-free beauty products on the shelves to choose from.
As consumers it can sometimes feel that there’s not much we can do, but making small changes to our habits can make a big difference. The best part is it doesn’t take much time, just a little compassion and effort.
