Father’s Day is celebrating its 108th anniversary this year on 17 June and it all began when a young woman decided her dad was simply the best.
Now celebrated worldwide in recognition of the important contribution fathers and father figures make in the lives of their children, families and society, the origin of this special day begins with the heartwarming story of Sonora Smart Dodd’s quest to make sure the world knew her dad was a hero. According to the history books, young Sonora came up with the idea tohonourher father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in church. After Sonora’s mother passed away, her fatherWilliam Jackson Smart, an American Civil War veteran, had taken responsibility of singlehandedly raising a newborn baby and his other five children. Sonora’s tireless campaigning finally paid off and the first officially documented Father’s Day celebration saw hundreds of young women and children hand red roses and other gifts to their fathers – ensuring dads everywhere got their own day to receive a little love and appreciation for all that they do.
While a lot has changed in a hundred years, luckily treating our dads to something special on Father’s Day isn’t one of them. Mall of the North is going the extra mile by giving dads what they love most for the entire month with loads of great shopping plus the hotly anticipated Wheels Expo from 4 to 10 June. Making a comeback at this year’s expo is the much-loved Classic Car Exhibition taking place on 9 June from 9am to 5pm in the overflow parking area. The cherry on top is that entrance to the exhibition is free where you can find a delicious variety of food and drink on sale, so make sure dad’s favourite cold drink is on you. Then on Father’s Day weekend the Jaguar Land Rover #TwoIconsTour makes a stop at Mall of the North from 15 to 17 June. Bring dad, grandad and the family to the tour and enjoy the Land Rover obstacle course, Jaguar ice road, dedicated kiddies area, and plenty more fun.
As if you needed any more reason to give your dad a hug and a pat on the back, new research shows that kids who spend quality time with their fathers are more likely to enjoy school, get better marks and eventually go on to get higher paying jobs. Pretty impressive, right? But we don’t need scientists to tell us our dads are heroes. You can see it in the face of any child looking up at their father.
So Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Mall of the North!
